United University Church Seismic Study and Usage Feasibility Study

Los Angeles, California

PBWS Architects was assigned to review the capacity of the United University Church to resist the effects of seismic activity and to assign a performance level based on the research. The goal of the retrofit work was for the building to perform at a USC life safety level “B” as well as comply with the seismic upgrade ordinances of the City of Los Angeles.

The team researched the impacts and specifics of construction of the structural upgrades with regard to constructability, aesthetics, finishes, fire/life safety, accessibility, and effects on the building program and function.

A section of the study addressed concerns about the impact of retrofit and modifications on the historic character of the building, constructed in 1931.
