Family Resource and Early Education Center

Duarte, California

This Center accommodates an enrollment of 108 infants, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergartners. Child development classrooms, a multi-purpose room, and kitchen are at ground level, with family counseling and resource areas on the second floor.  The building’s massing is organized to create a cloistered courtyard for toddlers, with a separate play yard for older children.  The building is serviced by a subterranean parking lot with space for 75 vehicles, a laundry area, and storage.  The design of the facility takes advantage of the moderate Southern California climate.  Large, sliding glass doors in the classrooms provide views of the outdoor play spaces and can be opened on good-weather days to bring the outdoors in.  The low voltage system, including closed-circuit tv and an electronic sign-in/sign-out system, was carefully integrated into the building for the increased safety of the children and staff.
